Application Form

The theme of the competition is 'Entertainment Production' - this is open to personal interpretation, but remember we're looking for some stunning photographs.

There are two categories;
• Best Live Entertainment / Event Photo
• an image that captures any live performance; a concert, theatre, TV or an event or anything that captures a live show / performance and could include audience too.

• Best Backstage Production Photo
• an image that captures the backstage environment: this could be of crew at work during load in, a shot in the wings of technicians at work, a image at FOH or scenes in catering or production office. It does not necessarily need to show people - it could be an artistic shot of an empty stage, a shot of a stack of equipment or flight cases.

A judging team selected by Backup will asses all entries and will pick their top 10 photographs, selecting their best overall photo for the 'The Judges Choice' award.
The top 10 photographs will then be published online for short period of time for people to review and to vote for 'The People's Choice' award.
We will announce both the winners of both 'The Judges Choice' and 'The People's Choice' awards in February 2023.

The closing dates for entries will be Midnight on Sunday 1st January 2023
The competition is only open to residents of the United Kingdom

Question 1

Before we begin, please ensure that you understand the following terms of the Backup Photography Competition.

1) Backup's decision as to the eligibility of individual photographs will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

2) Entrants must not cause injury, distress or damage either deliberately, whilst taking photographs.

3) Entrants must ensure that the agreement and permissions of any identifiable people contained in photographs has been given, and that any necessary permits, permissions and licenses are in place prior to submittal.

4) Entrants can submit up to two photographs to each category (a total of four).

5) Entrants are allowed to make small enhancements to photographs e.g. cropping, removing scratches, colour enhancement, but not the creation of a new image using composites or the superimposition of separate images to make a new photograph.

6) The competition is only open to residents of the United Kingdom.

7) The competition is not open to Backup Trustees, Backup Officers or the judges, and their immediate families.

8) Entrants must not be professional photographers. You will be considered a professional if you make half of your annual income from the sale of photographs.

9) All entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not infringe the rights of any other party. The entrants must be the sole owner of copyright in all photographs entered and must have obtained permission of any people featured in the entries or their parents/guardians if children under 16 are featured. Where an individual or a residential or commercial property or venue or equipment belonging to someone other than the photographer is featured, or it has been taken on private land, the photographer must seek permission and be prepared to provide written consent from those third parties when requested by Backup. Further, entrants must not have breached any laws when taking their photographs.

10) We are looking for original photographs, so entries must not have won any national or international competition prize previously.

11) Entrants will retain copyright in the photographs that they submit to Backup. By entering the competition all entrants grant to Backup the right to publish and exhibit their photographs on any media.

12) Entrants also agree to take part in post competition publicity if they are a winner.

13) Whilst Backup will make every effort to credit photographers, including printed reproductions of their work, we cannot guarantee that every use of the photographs will include the photographers' names.

14) Entrants must ensure that the photograph is not used to publicise or promote companies, individuals, organisations or causes – other than Backup including the photographic challenge and any associated Backup promotions) and the winning photographer themselves – until the 31st January 2023.

15) By entering, entrants will be deemed to have agreed to be bound by these rules and Backup reserves the right to exclude any entry from the competition at any time and in its absolute discretion if Backup has reason to believe that an entrant has breached these rules, acted fraudulently in any way or brings Backup or the entertainment industry into disrepute.
