PIL Crescendo Survey
Promoting Intersectional Gender Equality
in the Youth and Music Sector
Despite growing awareness of the issue, women and gender non-conforming people still face gender-specific challenges that hinder their fair access and representation in music. However, there is a growing body of evidence-based recommendations to address them to create a more inclusive and equitable music ecosystem.
Youth and music organisations, projects, and initiatives play a vital role in advancing gender equality in music, as they can tackle gender norms and stereotypes during young people’s formative years and make their early experiences with music accessible, enjoyable and empowering. Accordingly, many youth and music organisations have implemented initiatives and models to promote equality in their projects. However, others still lack the organisational knowledge and structure to do so.
In 2020, as a response to gender imbalances in the youth & music sector, JMI launched the “Play it Loud!” process, focused on fostering gender mainstreaming, diversity and inclusion in the JMI Network and beyond. This year, in partnership with the International Music Council and JM Norway, we have launched the “PIL Crescendo” research project, which has two main objectives:
1. to capture needs, challenges and best practices in relation to gender equality within the youth and music sector across Europe
2. to provide youth and music organisations – and any other relevant projects and initiatives – with concrete actions to promote gender equality
If you work at any youth and music organisation or a creative/music organisation that offers activities for children and young people up to 30 years old, we invite you to take this survey to help advance knowledge on equality-related practices within the youth music sector.
Once completed, you can save the survey and use its insights to guide your organisation’s actions toward promoting gender equality. At the end of the survey, you will also find a bibliography and a list of useful references to support further learning and implementation.
